Potenza is the capital of Basilicata and one of Italy’s highest regional capitals, at about 800 metres. The compact old town on the hill is best explored along Via Pretoria, the city’s main street, lined with palaces, churches and squares.
Sights include the cathedral of San Gerardo, the Guevara Tower – the last remnant of the castle – the National Archaeological Museum and the churches of San Francesco and the Trinità. Among its modern architecture, the Musmeci bridge, designed by engineer Sergio Musmeci, stands out.
At the end of May the city celebrates its patron saint, San Gerardo, with the Parade of the Turks, a historical pageant involving the whole community.
