Rapone stands on a hill at about 840 metres along the Ofanto valley, in north-western Basilicata. Traces of Palaeolithic settlement have been found in the area; the village was probably founded by people from «old Rapone» on the Serra delle Pietre.

Rapone is tied to a tradition of folk tales handed down through generations and is a stop on the «Path of Fairy Tales and Stars». Its churches include the mother church of San Nicola and the church of San Vito Martire.
