Ripacandida

A clifftop village and the San Donato sanctuary

Discover Ripacandida

Ripacandida stands on a rock among the hills of the Vulture-Melfi area. Its old town keeps 18th- and 19th-century baronial houses, Casa Lioy, built around 1089, and Palazzo Baffari-Rossi, once a Carmelite convent.

The village’s gem is the sanctuary of San Donato, whose 16th-century fresco cycle has earned it the nickname of Basilicata’s «little Assisi». A local speciality is the «ruciulatieggh», a braided bread made by local families.
