Salandra

A Norman village above the Salandrella valley

Discover Salandra

Salandra stands on a hill at about 600 metres in the north-west of the province of Matera, overlooking the Salandrella valley, the upper course of the Cavone river. The area was inhabited by the Oenotrians, while the present village dates from Norman times.

Its main monument is the convent of San Francesco of the Reformed Friars, founded in 1573 by Francesco Revertera and now the town hall, with the adjoining church of Sant’Antonio. For centuries it was a centre of theological studies, a piece of history still felt in the old town.
