San Martino d’Agri lies in the Agri valley, inside the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park. It took its name in the 11th–12th centuries from the cult of Saint Martin.

In the village you can visit the Sifola baronial palace, the mother church of Santa Maria della Rupe and the clock tower. On the summit of Monte Raparello stands the chapel of the Madonna della Rupe, a pilgrimage destination in May and August; hikers can explore the Trigella stream and the rock pinnacles of the Murge di Sant’Oronzo.
