Satriano di Lucania

Old Pietrafesa, village of murals and carnival masks

Discover Satriano di Lucania

Satriano di Lucania, once called Pietrafesa, spreads over the slopes of three rocks – the Castello, the Piesco and the Madonna della Rocca – above the Melandro river. Its territory holds the ruins of Satrianum, an ancient Lucanian centre that became a Norman stronghold and bishop’s see, with its tower.

The village is known for its murals telling local life and characters, including the painter Giovanni De Gregorio, known as «il Pietrafesa». At Carnival its traditional masks roam the streets: the hermit, the bear and Lent. The oldest church is Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, from the 12th–13th centuries.
