Scanzano Jonico

Scanzano Jonico lies on the plain along the Ionian coast, less than a kilometre from the sea, and has been an independent municipality since 1974, when it split from Montalbano Jonico. Its fertile, flat land is known for citrus fruit, strawberries and the market gardens of the Metaponto area.

At the entrance to the town stands the Baronial Palace, a square feudal building with an inner courtyard and crenellated tower, and the chapel of the Theotokos. In summer its beaches draw many visitors; scenes from «Basilicata coast to coast» were filmed here too.
