Tricarico

The Arab-Norman town and its carnival masks

Discover Tricarico

Tricarico, at about 700 metres, is known as an Arab-Norman town and has one of the best-preserved medieval centres in Basilicata, with the Civita, Saracena and Ràbata quarters laid out along the hill. It is a bishop’s see and the birthplace of the poet Rocco Scotellaro.

Don’t miss the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded by Robert Guiscard, where Louis I of Anjou was crowned in 1383, the Norman tower and the many convents. In January the famous Tricarico masks parade through town: men dressed as cows and bulls, representing a herd on transhumance.
