Vaglio Basilicata lies a few kilometres from Potenza. Its territory includes the archaeological site of Serra di Vaglio, an ancient settlement of the Peuketiantes mentioned by Hecataeus of Miletus, with a Lucanian phase between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC and mighty walls.

In the nearby Braida di Vaglio necropolis, rich princely tombs have been found; not far away is the Lucanian sanctuary of Rossano di Vaglio, dedicated to the goddess Mefitis. A curiosity: the local dialect is Gallo-Italic.
