Accettura

The village of the Maggio festival, near the Lucanian Dolomites

Discover Accettura

Accettura stands at 770 metres in the heart of the Gallipoli Cognato and Lucanian Dolomites Regional Park, surrounded by woods and pastures that cover half its territory. It is a great base for walks in the Gallipoli Cognato forest and towards the sandstone peaks of the Lucanian Dolomites.

The village is famous for the Maggio di Accettura, the feast of its patron saint San Giuliano, which begins on Pentecost Sunday: an ancient tree ritual in which a large Turkey oak, the «Maggio», is «married» to the top of a holly tree, the «Cima». In the old town, the mother church of San Nicola and the church of the Annunziata, with its 14th-century mullioned window, are worth a visit.
