Gorgoglione

A village overlooking the Agri valley

Discover Gorgoglione

Gorgoglione stands at about 800 metres overlooking the Agri valley, in the central-western part of the province of Matera. The area has been inhabited for centuries, as shown by 4th-century BC tombs found at Santa Maria degli Angeli.

In the village you can visit the mother church of Santa Maria Assunta and, just outside, the country sanctuary of the Madonna del Pergamo, recorded as early as 1131, in a panoramic spot. In June the statue of the Madonna is carried on a flower-decked cart to the sanctuary, where it stays until September. Hikers can also seek out the Brigands’ Cave.
